The largest and most diverse Protected Area in El Salvador. This National park is home of thousands of species, some endemic flora, migratory birds and source of eight rivers that sustain life in the mangroves below.
The story says, on the early 20th century, sacs with green coffee were sent on the back of mules from the Northern farms, near Tacuba, to the port of Acajutla on the Pacific. But there was a gorge between two mountains that interrupted the pass and, to save this gorge, the porters used to make up bridges with trees for the mules to walk. Many times animals and people slipped off and fell into the depths. It began to be known as Paso El Imposible (“the impossible crossing”)… until a masonry bridge on this crossing was built and a plaque that reads “On May 1968 this crossing was no longer impossible”.
Today the old mules path makes one great off-the-beaten-track hike across the tropical forest, streams of fresh water and miradores overlooking the rugged terrain. The hike starts in the official access of the park, on the outskirts of San Francisco Menéndez district, with an elevation of 245 m above sea level, reaching a top elevation of near 1000 m along 20 Km walk, round trip.
