Follow the steps of one of the greatest historical figures of El Salvador. Saint Óscar Romero (1917-1980).
After being named San Salvador Archbishop in 1977 he spoke against human rights violations, state’s repression, injustice and poverty.
Romero became The Voice of the Voiceless and was assassinated during mass in 1980. Today his legacy is deep in Salvadoran society and known around the world.
Named Saint by the Vatican in 2018, San Salvador is full with landmarks and sites related to Romero’s life, ministry and legacy. The Chappell of Divina Providencia Hospital where he was martyred and his private chambers where he lived his last years. In city’s downtown we’ll visit Metropolitan Cathedral where Romero addressed many of his speeches and his body was put to rest. The touching Memorial Monumento a la Memoria y la Verdad that pays homage to thousands of victims of El Salvador’s Civil War.
This experience couldn’t be complete without a visit to the Centro Monseñor Romero in the UCA with a small hall dedicated to martyrs who gave their lives in El Salvador, including 6 Jesuit priests assassinated by the governments’ forces here in 1989.
