Do you consider yourself a serious hiker? What about hiking 3 major volcanoes in 1 day? Sounds good, eh? Let me join you to conquest this trilogy of volcanoes.
Los Volcanoes National Park is a compound of 3 volcanoes, including Santa Ana (2,384 m) the tallest in the country; Izalco (1,985 m), one the youngest in the world and the extinct Cerro Verde (2,030 m). Altogether, the three make one challenging hiking day, with steep slopes, loose ground, volcanic wasteland, solidified lava flows, live fumaroles and breathtaking views.
The walk starts early. On time to catch sunrising from the crater of Santa Ana volcano followed by some resting in order to start walking from Cerro Verde’s visitors center to the top Izalco, and back. This two volcanoes make the steepest section despite are shorter than Santa Ana.
In a clear day, expect to see a skyline of more a dozen volcanoes, in El Salvador and Guatemala, the Coatepeque caldera lake, the fertile valleys and coffee fields on the slopes of the Western volcanic belt.
This may be a rigorous hike for most. A good physical condition is required. A deli-style sandwich will be provided before departing from Cerro Verde to Izalco.
Please consider to bring:
- Enough and constant hydration,
- Sun/rain protection,
- Adequate footwear with good grip (no new shoes),
- Some snacks for the walk,
- Trekking poles,
- A light jacket/wind breaker,
- An extra set of dry clothes.

2:30 AM - Depart from San Salvador
4:00 AM - Start hiking from meeting point.
5:30 AM - Reach the crater of Santa Ana volcano
8:30 AM - Back to meeting point. Get some rest.
10:00 AM - Start hiking from Cerro Verde to Izalco.
12:00 PM - Reach the top of Izalco volcano.
2:30 PM - Reach Cerro Verde's visitors center.
5:00 PM - Return to San Salvador
